Mobility Scooters & Insurance

Mobility scooters are great aids for disabled or elderly people giving them a better way of life and a more independent life. Purchasing a mobility scooter can be a daunting prospect though as there are many factors to take into consideration. These include:
  • Are you using the scooter indoors or outside?
  • Will you be driving on roads?
  • Comfort, look and feel of the scooter – therefore testing a few is a good idea first.
  • Can it be transported incase you were to travel?
Another thing to take into consideration is whether to have mobility scooter insurance or not. Anyone thinking of buying a mobility scooter is advised to take out insurance because if you have an accident whilst using your scooter, any injuries caused to other people and damage to their property will be paid for, if your scooter is damaged, lost or stolen it will be repaired quickly or be replaced and you can even take your scooter with you if you travel abroad as some mobility scooter insurance companies insurance policy covers being abroad including during the airport and on board aircraft.

Some companies offer a variety of different insurance policies such as insurance for new or used scooters ranging from 1 year to 3 years cover. Other policies include insurance cover and warranty cover so if anything was to go wrong with your scooter, it would be covered under the warranty cover. These also can range from 1 year to 3 years.

Currently, there is no lawful requirement for any person using a mobility scooter to have insurance but it is something you should really have at least at a third party cover to take care of all the possible claims that could be made if anything was to happen. Mobility scooter insurance has 2 key elements to it – one for cover for your own vehicle as well as insurance cover against accidental injury or even damage caused to those that could be affected by its use. Mobility scooter insurance is definitely an affordable and effective way of stopping any problems so make sure you have got yours!
