Different Types of Hole Saws

A hole saw is a saw blade whose annular kerf creates a hole in the workpiece without hang to cut up the core material. Hole saws typically have a pilot drill bit at the centre to to keep the saw teeth from walking. They are one of the most popular tools for making round holes of different diameters in a wide range of different materials. There are 3 main different types of hole saws:
  1. Morse Master Cobalt Bi Metal Hole Saw
  2. Morse Tungsten Carbide Tipped Hole Saws
  3. The Morse Tungsten Carbide Grit Edge Hole Saws

Being one of the most popular types of hole saws as it suitable for most jobs. Although it has been thought that this type of hole saw cannot cut stainless steel, the Morse Bi Metal Hole Saw has been specifically designed to do this and can consistently make approximately 75 cuts through stainless steel. Standard morse bi metal hole saws have a cutting depth of 38mm and has a high speed steel cutting edge and tough fatigue resistance backer.

Morse Tungsten Carbide Tipped Hole Saws

These hole saws have been specifically designed for sawing holes in abrasive materials, for example, fibreglass, drywall and nail free wood. They have a coarser tooth pitch which enables thicker nail free wood surfaces such as countertops to be cut without scorching. An advantage of this type of hole saw is that is it super resistant to heat and water with a shock resistant back. This saw generally is preferred by locksmiths as it is ideal for cutting out mortise locks because of it's tooth pitch allowing bigger chips to be cut.

The Morse Tungsten Carbide Grit Edge Hole Saws

These are the hole saws that are designed to cut much more abrasive materials such as steel, cast iron and fibreglass. They have a castellated edge so they can run in forwards and reverse, therefore doubling the life of the hole saw!

Why is Coconut Water So Good For You?

Coming from the young green coconuts before they have developed into the brown shell that we all know and recognise coconuts to be, coconut water is a pure source of hydration and nutrition. In it's raw state, it is known as 'isotonic' meaning it is one of closest things to the composition of the fluids in our bodies. Due to it being a natural source of potassium which helps maintain normal muscle function and it also has no added sugar to the natural occurring sugars of the coconut. It is also great for a hangover!

I'm sure you're all going on your work Christmas parties at some point this month and the alcohol will be flowing when the next morning you will have an almighty hangover! Coconut water = the perfect solution! When you're hungover, you tend to be dehydrated as alcohol is a diuretic, you need to keep hydrating your body with fluids. Too much alcohol can have an effect on other body parts such as kidneys, liver and stomachs as they cannot handle the impact of alcohol, therefore, they need to quickly recover.

Other benefits of coconut water:
  • Improves digestive systems
  • Helps in prevention of viral infections
  • Temperature control – water is the body's cooling system so water helps the body when it starts to overheat. Minerals can sometimes be lost through sweating and need to be replaced quickly for hydration which is where isotonic drinks prove to be the best.

Any Side Effects?

Because coconut water is one of the healthiest drinks around, it doesn't have any side effects unless anyone has a severe allergic reaction to nuts. It is perfectly fine for pregnant women, children and women that are breastfeeding.

Coconut water can also be made into alcoholic and non-alcoholic cocktails and my 2 favourite are below:

Coconut Colada
  • 2 ounces Cîroc Coconut Vodka
  • 2 ounces coconut water
  • 2 ounces Coco Lopéz Coconut milk
  • Mini umbrella
  • 1 cherry
  • Fresh coconut, with top cut off
Combine vodka, coconut water and coconut milk, and serve in fresh coconut with umbrella and cherry as garnish.

Non-Alcoholic Xcalacoco Welcoming Drink

  • 1 peeled fresh coconut
  • 1/3 ounce lemon grass
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 3 cups water
Boil the coconut and the lemon grass with 1 cup of water. Once it has completely boiled, add remainder of water and sugar. Strain the liquid and cool in the freezer before serving.

ZICO Benefits

New year – Healthier you? If so, drinking coconut water should be on the top of your list!

Coconut water comes from young green coconuts before the hairy shell we know has developed. For thousands of years coconut water has been a pure source of hydration, nutrition and well being for people in the tropics. Coconut water is credited with many health giving benefits! In it's raw state, coconut water is 'isotonic' meaning it is one of the closest things to the composition of the fluids in our own bodies. A favourite for many sports men and models it is the ideal thirst quencher!

Being hydrated is one of the healthiest things you can do for yourself, 60% of your body is composed by water and is perhaps the most important element in your diet. Hydration is vital to many parts of your body's processes:
  • Cells - The water in your body is crucial for transporting nutrients to your cells.
  • Muscles and Joints – water plays a big role in cushioning your joint from impact and in helping the your muscles function properly
  • Digestion – water is apparent in every stage of the digestion process, it dissolves nutrients so that they can be delivered to your body's cells.
  • Temperature Control – water is the body's cooling system, when the body over heats it sweats loosing water and minerals which need to be quickly replaced, this is where isotonic drinks are valueable.
  • Brain – Just a 1-2% drop in your body's fluid levels will affect your ability to concentrate.
  • Skin- water maintains skin's elasticity, softness and tone.
  • Kidneys – Your kidneys are your body's detoxing centres and need to be flushed with water in order to work properly.
  • Heart – Hydration maintains proper blood pressure, dehydration decreases heart function and can lead to reduce blood pressure.
As well as keeping you Hydrated allows your body to function properly Coconut water is:
  • Low in carbs and sugars
  • 99% fat free
  • replenishes your body fluids after exercising
  • Raises metabolism and promotes weight loss.
With Coconut water being an alternative to sports drinks such as Gatorade, as this is high in sugar and low in the nutrients you need, you should drink coconut water during light physical activity rather than intense work outs.

Coconut Water

Coconut water is the clear liquid inside the coconuts when they are green. As the fruit matures, the coconut water is gradually replaced by the coconut meat and air. It is made with 100% fresh water and has no added sugar along with no fat and no cholesterol making it one of the most healthiest drinks around!

The water comes from the green coconuts before they turn into the brown shell that we all know and recognise as coconuts. In it's raw state it is 'isotonic' meaning it is one of the closest things to be composition of the fluids in our own bodies. Todays reasons for drinking it is to discover the freshness and the health benefits.

When To Drink It

With it being an alternative to sports drinks such as Gatorade as this is high in sugar and low in the nutrients you need, it is important to keep hydrated and refreshed to replenish your body's supply and to drink coconut water during light physical activity rather than intense workouts.

The Benefits Of Drinking Coconut Water
  • Low in carbs & sugars
  • 99% fat free
  • Keeps the body cool and at the correct temperature
  • After exercising, it replenishes your bodys fluids
  • It has been known it can raise your metabolism and promote weight loss
  • It is more nutritious than drinking whole milk
If you don't fancy drinking pure coconut water, you can always mix it in with something to make a “cocktail” as such. Below is an idea of a recipe that you could use coconut water in.

Melon Tango

The combination of coconut water and melon make this drink very refreshing and this vitamin C loaded fruity concoction has been an all-time favourite amongst my family and friends! You can also add a bit of black salt to perk it up! All you need is the following:

2 cups of muskmelon, cubed juice of 2 oranges
2 cups of coconut water
2 tablespoons of sugar
add a pinch of black salt if you'd like

How To Make The Perfect Melon Tango!

Blend the melon and strain it well then combining the other ingredients and mix well.
Serve chilled in glasses and you can always garnish with mint leaves!

If you want to add a little spice to it, why not add some alcohol to the coconut water? For example, add 2 ounces of golden rum along with coconut water and serve on ice!

As you may have seen plenty of celebrities have been seen drinking coconut water. Celebrities such as Rihanna, Kim Kardashian and Anne Hathaway have all been seen drinking the nutrient packed drink making it the drink to have this year!

Mobility Scooters & Insurance

Mobility scooters are great aids for disabled or elderly people giving them a better way of life and a more independent life. Purchasing a mobility scooter can be a daunting prospect though as there are many factors to take into consideration. These include:
  • Are you using the scooter indoors or outside?
  • Will you be driving on roads?
  • Comfort, look and feel of the scooter – therefore testing a few is a good idea first.
  • Can it be transported incase you were to travel?
Another thing to take into consideration is whether to have mobility scooter insurance or not. Anyone thinking of buying a mobility scooter is advised to take out insurance because if you have an accident whilst using your scooter, any injuries caused to other people and damage to their property will be paid for, if your scooter is damaged, lost or stolen it will be repaired quickly or be replaced and you can even take your scooter with you if you travel abroad as some mobility scooter insurance companies insurance policy covers being abroad including during the airport and on board aircraft.

Some companies offer a variety of different insurance policies such as insurance for new or used scooters ranging from 1 year to 3 years cover. Other policies include insurance cover and warranty cover so if anything was to go wrong with your scooter, it would be covered under the warranty cover. These also can range from 1 year to 3 years.

Currently, there is no lawful requirement for any person using a mobility scooter to have insurance but it is something you should really have at least at a third party cover to take care of all the possible claims that could be made if anything was to happen. Mobility scooter insurance has 2 key elements to it – one for cover for your own vehicle as well as insurance cover against accidental injury or even damage caused to those that could be affected by its use. Mobility scooter insurance is definitely an affordable and effective way of stopping any problems so make sure you have got yours!

Dynamometers & What They Mean

What Is A Dynamometer?

A dynamometer is a device that can be used to determine the power required to operate an engine. They also measure the characteristics of torque, rotational speed and power output of a combustion engine, electric motor or other power source. There are two different dynamometer systems that are engine dynamometers and chassis dynamometers.

Engine dynamometers offer the most innovative engine diagnostic tools in the market today. It measures the power and torque directly from the engine's crankshaft when the engine is removed from a vehicle. They are also capable of indicating when the repair is complete, the engine is operating according to specifications and when they are ready to break in engines before installation. Engine dynamometers are mainly used the engine manufacturers themselves. In order to perform the measurements on the engine, the engine has to be connected to the dynamometer with a shaft, however, some new dynamometers can be connected to a computer making it easier to operate giving more precise results.

A chassis dynamometer measures the power delivered to the surface of the drive roller by the drivewheels. These are often found in performance workshops. Due to it measuring the output of an engine through the wheels of a car, the engine doesn't have to be removed from the frame of the vehicle.

The Ac dynamometer is constructed using a low inertia AC motor that is specifically designed for engine tests that are mounted on a substantial baseframe. For trunnion mounted machines, a precision strain gauge load cell is used. Heat generated within the dynamometer is corrupted by the integral cooling fan. The advantages of an ac dynamometer is that it has very low inertia, very fast response and line regenerative whereas the disadvantages are that it can be quite a high cost and it does require high amperage electrical service.

Hydraulic Dynamometers have been designed to be compact, robust and allow easy maintenance. The dynamometer working compartment consist of semi-circular shaped vanes cast into stainless steel rotors. The dynamometer load is controlled by a characterised water outlet valve which is operated by a closed loop electro hydraulic servo system. The power absorbed by the dynamometer is carried away by the water in the form of heat.

Powertrain testing is currently undergoing massive change which is being driven by the challenges that global society are currently facing. The need for reduced dependence on fossil-fuels and improved carbon-footprints are driving changes in the technologies used in all vehicles. This in turn has a direct impact on approaches to testing of Powertrain components and systems.

Property Investment Spain

For many years people have been investing in overseas properties as a financial move to be able to see significant returns on their money. It is typical that overseas properties investment is seen to be more 'popular' than investing in UK property as overseas properties have a good chance they will increase in value. However we are living in difficult economic times with The Credit Crunch and the crisis in the Euro zone still looming investors have been left wondering if property investment abroad or in the UK is a wise move.

Despite the current economic climate property remains one of the very best and more reliable routes to sustained prosperity. Understandably it isn't a guarantee to fast-track untold riches, but it does generally perform well having a proven track record of riding out the storms and holds out considerable potential in long term capital growth.

Although rising inflation is bad news for savers, the implications that it has had on property owners and mortgage holders are rather more mixed. Inflation tends to reduce the cost of mortgage repayments in real terms and where it affects house prices, inflation also serves to increase capital value of ones investment.

Property has exceptional revenue generating potential in its own rights, and the current economic factors are driving up demand for rented accommodation, for first time buyers it is hard to find a place on the property ladder, resulting in an accelerated growth in rental markets.

What should you do if looking to invest in property?

Firstly you should look at the location of the area you are wanting to invent in, with particular attention to the population, if it is a tourism area, the main industry within that specific area, look at compare property prices which include the predicted growth of the properties and you will then establish any potential returns you will get for your money.

How To Reduce Of Limit Jammed Slugs In Hole Saws With Cutting Technique

When cutting in wood, particularly thicker sections like 2 x 4’s, it is often difficult to remove the slug from inside the hole saw at the completion of the cut. Here is a simple cutting technique that allows easy removal of the slug.

  1. Apply a slight orbiting motion to the drill motor as you feed the hole saw into the material.
  2. Keep the orbiting motion small – within the diameter of the hole being cut therefore the hole with not be oversize
Benefits
  • The hole saw feeds though the material easier
  • Sawdust is ‘ augured’ out of the cut better and keeps the kerf cleaner
  • The hole saw cuts cooler and does not burn the inside diameter of the hole
  • The outside diameter of the slug is reduced by the orbiting action
  • The slug will either fall out of the hole saw or be easily pushed out with a screw driver
  • No expensive, awkward ejector arbor is necessary

Please not this technique works only on wood and other similar soft materials.

How To Use a Jigsaw Blade

First select the type of jigsaw blade. This is dependent on the type of material you are cutting, the thickness of the material, the shape you want to cut (straight or curved) and the type of finish you require (rough, smooth, fast).

Be careful to select the correct end fitting for your make of machine. If you need help view our saw selection guide.

Mark the design you want to cut on the material. Being careful to not get too close to the edge and or making the corners too tight.

If you require tight corners then MPS 3182 is specifically designed to be able to cut tighter curves then any of our competitors.

Clamp the material firmly to a work table or between saw horses. This prevents unwanted movement.

Put on safety goggles to prevent any chips or splinters from damaging eyes.

Start on the corner of the material. If this is not possible for example you want an interior cut and don’t want to damage the outer material i.e you want the hole and not the slug use a pilot drill with a hand drill to make the hole through the material near or on the edge of the design. Then place the blade in the hole before turning on the machine.

Once cutting has begun you need to move the machine in a smooth slow motion guiding the leading edge of the jigsaw blade on the outline of the design applying enough pressure to prevent the jigsaw machine from jumping but not so much as to force the blade through the material.

Let the blade do the cutting, forcing the blade can reduce the jigsaw blade life or even break the blade on the shank.

To finish the cut you either stop the machine or wait till the blade has stopped moving and pull the blade out of the material or finish on the edge of the material and gently guide if away from the material.

For best results always use a quality jigsaw blade.

How To Improve The Life Of Your Bi Metal Hole Saw

Keeping your hole saw cool will improve its life greatly.

There are many ways to do this and one of the most popular ways is to use a shop bought lubricant. However a cheaper way to keep your hole saw cool is to get a household sponge and cut it to the size of your holes saw. Soak the sponge in water and place it inside the hole saw threading it onto the pilot drill. As you use the hole saw the water will trickle down the sides of the hole saw helping to clear chips and disperse heat and improving the life of your hole saw.

Running your hole saw at the correct speed again will dramatically increase the life of your hole saw.
The speed the hole saw needs to be run at depends on the diameter of the saw and on the material you wish to cut.

Many people believe that you need to run your hole saw faster through stainless steel. However the very opposite is true. Slow steady speed with gentle pressure is the answer.

For example a 20mm Morse hole saw cutting wood or mild steel should be run at 425rpm but the same hole saw going through stainless steel should be run at 210rpm.

The speeds for most of the common materials can be found on the side of a Morse hole saw box.

Hole Saw Selection

What Is A Hole Saw?
Hole saws are the most convenient way of making round holes of varying diameters in a wide range of materials.

Saw Selection
The type of hole saw you need is chosen entirely on the type of material you want to cut.

The Morse Master Cobalt Bi Metal Hole Saw is the most popular and is suitable for most general jobs. But don’t be mislead into thinking that it is not up to the task of cutting some of the most toughest and demanding materials out there, such as stainless steel. It is general thought that bi metal hole saws can not cut stainless steel however the Morse Bi Metal Hole Saw has been specifically designed to do just that.
In fact, some companies carry out all our cutting tests using stainless steel because it would simply take too long to wear out one of our saws . Independent cutting tests have proven that saws can consistently make 75+ cuts through stainless steel.
The Morse Master Cobalt Bi Metal hole saw is also excellent at cutting through all machinable metals, wood, nail embedded wood and plastic.
The standard Morse Bi Metal Saws have a cutting depth of 1-1/2”. If you are looking for a saw to cut deeper, some companies do stock a range of Extra Deep Morse Bi Metal Hole Saws which allow cutting up to 1-7/8” deep.
The Morse Tungsten Carbide Tipped Hole Saws have been specifically designed for sawing holes in abrasive materials such as fibreglass, particleboard, asbestos board, formica, aluminium, drywall, acoustic tile and nail free wood especially MDF and counter tops.
The carbide tipped hole saws have a coarser tooth pitch which enables thicker nail free wood surfaces such as countertops to be cut without scorching.
This is the saw that is most preferred by locksmiths and is ideal for cutting out mortise locks due to its coarser tooth pitch which allows bigger chips to form so cutting faster and smooth and the carbide tips give a longer life
The Morse Tungsten Carbide Grit Edge Hole Saws are designed for the very hard or very abrasive materials such as hardened steel ,cast iron, cinder block, ceramic including porcelain, foamed glass, fibreglass, composites, computer flooring , cement and acoustic tile. The carbide grit hole saws are also ideal for extra thin materials where standard bi metal would be stripped or chip carbide tipped teeth.
The Morse carbide grit hole saws have a castellated edge so unlike the bi metal or carbide tipped hole saws they can be run in forwards and reverse and therefore double the life of the saw.
