What Is A Hole Saw Arbor?

The hole saw is driven by an arbor and is a way of attaching the hole saw to a hand-held drill or drill press. When used in conjunction with the pilot drill it guides the hole saw and keeps it running straighter.

Arbor Selection

For saws below 32mm in diameter the most popular arbor is an M34 and to attach the hole saw to the arbor simple screw the hole saw that contains a male thread in the centre of the cap to the corresponding female thread on the arbor shank.

For saws over 32mm in diameter the most popular arbor is an M45P which in addition to the thread attachment also has two pins which move up and down to slot into the rear of the hole saws body once the saw has been attached by the tread to the arbor. This gives extra support and prevents the thread from being stripped.

Both the M45P and M34 hole saws are suitable for use with standard ½” chucks.

For those people who do not want two separate arbors or are using the hole saws, companies occasionally produce an arbor that is suitable for use with most hole saws irrespective of diameter. The M44K is suitable for use with hole saws from 14mm in diameter to 152mm and is again suitable for use with a ½” drill chuck.

You might require different chuck sizes so see the table below to find the most suitable arbor. Most Morse arbors come complete with a pilot drill. For use with carbide tipped hole saws or carbide grit hole saws, choose the M34CT and M45PCT which comes complete with a carbide tipped pilot drill.
